BULLMASTIFF CLUB OF QUEENSLAND
6th CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW
11 June 2011
Judge - Roni Oma (WA)
A big thanks to the Bullmastiff Club of Queensland for asking me to judge your 6th Championship Show; and a very big thank you to the exhibitors for allowing me to go over your dogs. I know some exhibitors travelled a long way, and I am particularly thankful to them.
I had a great, if cold, day. Coming from the warm dry West, I was very grateful the rain held off, and the cold obviously suited the dogs, if not the humans !!. It was good to see our wonderful breed relaxed and happily moving without getting overheated or panting excessively.
I found most of the dogs in good show condition, well behaved and their handlers friendly and happy to follow my instructions. This helped me really enjoy my job. My thanks also to Vicki my steward, and Carra the photographer, who provided me with great support.
I was looking for balanced, good-moving dogs. For me, balance in a Bullmastiff essentially means a square and broad body, a level back, with good angulation both in front and rear. The head is very important too, but I’m willing to forgive a little on the head, in favour of a dog with an excellent body. Uppermost in my mind as well, is that the Bullmastiff is a working breed, and so efficient movement is also essential.
I found what I was looking for in my BIS, RUBIS and dog and bitch reserves. They are in my opinion wonderful representatives of the breed, and it was also pleasing to see some lovely younger stock coming up.
The critiques which follow are my opinion of your dogs, on the day. I hope you feel I have done your dogs justice and accept the critiques in a constructive spirit.
Thanking you all again, and I’m sure I’ll catch up with you around the showring somewhere across the country !!
